If sanctioning from the athletic and boxing commissions was so great an achievement, wtf is happening to the sport? Clearly, Dana and Zuffa aren't able to see the big picture.

You make no sense. Getting sanctioned was an important part of bringing UFC back to being popular from having been relegated to "sideshow" status before. "WTF is happening to the sport?" Well, thanks to Zuffa's planning (getting back on cable, starting a reality show, fighting for "legit sports coverage", etc.) it is exploding in popularity in the US. Sure they don't get as many people for the shows as Pride -- how the hell could they in the US? Pride operates in a market much more friendly to MMA as entertainment; they have fewer other big-time sports to compete with; of course they get more fans and more money than UFC.
