Welding is easy, especially MIG type. If you can trace, you can weld.

I have to ask about the 5' width, are you going to be able to fit a 7' bar in there (with the weights on the outside of the cage)?
I'm guessing that the bar has about 4' of space for your hands and a 1.5' on each end for the weights?
Are you using a longer bar?
